very sharp, use it a lot for macro work

As a macro lens, it lacks 1:1 repro. On the other hand, it's a very fast focuser, even without a motor (mine is Nikon AF), thanks to a well engineered IF system. Problem; it "breathes", meaning that framing changes as the lens acquires focus. Hard to frame precisely if you are shooting on a tripod. Wide open it's noticeably soft off-center, something that can be bothersome or not, as most macro shooters will stop down noticeably to gain DOF. At f/5.6 is great, bu then you will be hard pressed to find a dog at that aperture. As a general use short tele, it's a solid performer but quite heavy. Build is, however, top-notch. I've had mine for more around nine years and it's still in perfect condition. I don't think I'll ever replace it as it keeps getting me dozens of great images.
