Quality controll is the issue with this lens. My sample is very sharp. Distortion is a bit high. Some samples of this lens have been reviewed badly.
Mine did go back for repair when the auto focusing stopped working. Sigma repaired it under warranty. Stay with Canon.

I've got an used lens and it works fine. I use it with a Nikon F90X (for portrait and landscape) and a Nikon D80 (for portrait and general use) and I've taken a lot of good photo.
When I need a (relatively) light lens with a (relatively) great zoom range and a (relatively) wide aperture for general shooting purpouse or portraits, I chose this lens (I've also a Nikon 18-200 f3.5-5.6 VR and a Sigma 24-70 f2.8, but they are very heavy and sometime I van't take them with me).
If you can find one of this used lens in good condition, I think is a good idea to buy it, just in case you'll will need it in the future.

I'm fairly pleased with this lens, it does reasonably well for general useage. It came used with a Canon 10D and matches the camera quite well. I tend to use this one as my walkabout lens, it having a fairly good range for most things I'm likely to shoot.

I've owned two of these lens. The first I used on a high end Canon 35 mm. I liked it so well that when I went digital and bought the Pentax K10D I bought one as my general all purpose lens. I haven't been disapointed.

For the price it's one of the fastest lens out there. The zoom action is smooth and it focuses pretty quickly. It rarely hunts on the Pentax and almost never did on the Canon. This lens gets me the pictures I want.

Yes, there are certainly better lens out there, but in this price range, the lens is truly outstanding. I may eventually upgrade to a constant 2.8, but for the price difference I'm not sure. I highly recommend this lens to anyone who wants the speed of the 2.8 to 4, but who doesn't have big bucks to spend.

I've had no repair problems with either lens.

Very sharp in the centre, reasonably good at the edges. a little bit less than the nikkor 28-105 f3.5-4.5.
