Nikon AF-S VR 105mm f/2.8G Micro IF-ED Reviews

Last year I read mixed reports of the 105/2.8 VR, from stellar, to rubbish. Upon buying a copy and using it extensively for 5 months I've come to the conclusion that the negative reports I read were largely unfounded.
This is an excellent lens that delivers beautiful backdrops and typical macro-quality sharpness and contrast. The 105 VR fits snugly in with the other micro-nikkors in every respect, no problem. CA are negligible, not as controlled as the 200/4 in this area, but still invisible, unless you go around pixel-peeping at 200%.
When tested by myself against the other micro-nikkors, the 105 VR came second in sharpness, behind the 60/2.8, but ahead of the 200/4, with the 70-180 at the bottom. Differences in the field are invisible.
Build quality is very acceptable. Manual focus is very smooth. VR? Yes, you can hand-hold this lens, and I often do, VR certainly helps even down to macro. But I still depend on a tripod for serious work. Not sexy, I know. ;)
I can only put some people's dissatisfaction with image quality down to a bad sample or, more than likely, bad macro technique. I also don't understand the low value for money rating, since the 105 VR is no more expensive than the original 105 macro.
Unfortunately for me with this being a G-lens I cannot use it effectively with my BP-6 bellows. But that's progress I suppose. :)

Own this lens now for two years.
Been using it on F5 D2Xs and D3s.
You can use a G type lens on bellows by modifying a BR-4.Of course stopping down gonna be a bit cumbersome but perfectly possible to do. The results are of course not as good as a 19mm true Macro.I?m also not a big fan of G-type lenses, but I can live with it.
VR is usefull at normal distances.
For close-up use higher ISO?s or a tripod or flash.
For close ups you should always stop down a stop or better 2(depending on taste).
Full open is the quality not so convencing, would like to see that bite of Zeiss.
If you want a macro with AF this is the one to go.
If you don?t bother about AF get the Zeiss(f2).
Personally I?m really happy with this lens.
I got like with most of that new stuff no complains.
Happy shooting!
