Nikon AF VR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 Reviews

Incredibly compact and high contrast and definition for a 5x zoom. 10.2MPix raw do not outperform the lens. It is obviously heavy but the size and the VR allows handheld pictures at full zoom. VR is Nikon's first try and improves stability by 2-3 stops. It is noisier and slower than "S" lenses, although focusing speed largely depends on the camera used since it uses the in-camera focusing mechanism. D200 and D80 (my case) results in fast and precise focus even in interiors, although not as fast as more recent ultrasonic offerings. Full extension (400mm) in dark interiors will sometimes find no focus. Focusing ring is either engaged or disengaged, with the capability of locking either, but will not allow for manual adjustment over auto-focus. Zoom ring is stiff although this is preferred in my case than "light" zoom rings as in the case of my fabulous 18-200. DX sized cameras improve further the lens distortion and corner fading. Latest tripod mounts seem more solid than the original one. Although the exterior is made of plastic, it is still top quality. If Nikon went supersonic internal focusing, allowed for M/A focusing and either rezised the lens for DX only or improved aperture this would make it perfect. Nikon value.
