If your main problems are budget and weight like me, this lens should be considered. I carry it in my compact lowepro bag while trekking and I think it's a good choice when compared to 80-200 f2.8 priced for approx. 1500$.
At last, it is a "cheap" choice.

I own both the "pro" 80-200/2.8 and this "amateur" 70-300 D/ED. On a tripod at f/8 (and up to 135mm) they're very close. On the road, I'll take the lighter 70-300 and use f/11 from 135mm to 300mm. Avoid the plastic-mount G lens.
