Lenses for Nikon dSLRs

By: shiznito 511 days ago
I have been recently debating about purchasing a new lens for my D70 and I can't seem to decide between the Sigma 18mm - 200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM or the Nikon 18mm - 200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR-II Nikkor lens. Does anybody have any experience with these lenses to help me make my decision. And I seem to have gotten conflicting information about whether the hypersonic motor (HSM) in the Sigma and/or the silent wave motore (SWM) in the Nikkor is compatible with my D70 in autofocus mode. All of the stores say that they are compatible with all Nikon models, but I seem to remember running across an article recently while doing my research that suggested the these HSM and SWM are only compatible with a limited set of Nikon camera models. Does anyone know the answer to this? It might help me decide if the Sigma HSM is worth the 70 bucks more...especially if the HSM will not work on my D70. Thanks.

The Nikon website will no doubt answer your compatibility question, but in terms of quality I would expect the Mikkor to be superior to the Sigma and in that respect my choice would be clear.

Nikon lenses for Nikon cameras.

You might like to look at this web site http://www.kenrockwell.com/index.htm. He is a bit one sided towards Nikon (me too), but his reviews are spot on and very extensive.

I am using a Sigma 18-200mm DC OS HSM lens on my Nikon D70.
The HSM works well with silent smooth focusing and there was no problem whatsoever in terms of system incompatibility.
Of course, this lens cannot compare with its Nikkor counterpart, but considering the price, it's value for money and I'm quite satisfied.
Hope this late message will help.
