Canon 17-55 2.8 or 24-70 2.8 on Canon 40D

Which lens would be better for that all around lens on a 40D. The 17-55 or 24-70? Does anyone have examples of the same shot using both lenses?
Considering the crop factor, the 17-55mm must be the more generally useful. The 24-70mm has very limited wide angle capability.
