Takumar 300mm F4 info sought please

Hi,

I'm looking for a 300mm lens. I don't want to spend a great deal of money, so I'll be looking for something via ebay.

I here great things about the old Takumar lenses, but I can't seem to find much about the 300mm F4 SMC lens. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this lens, and how its likely to perform. For example, can it compete with later manual 300mm F4.5 lenses from the likes of Nikon and Olympus?
