Long zoom ranges always tend to be a compromise optically.

Maybe it could be worth looking at a shorter tele-zoom to compliment your existing kit lens.

I prefer a combination of two lens:

18-50 sigma: YES! It's very good compared at EF-S 18-55
55-200 tamron: Good sharpness. only carefull with calibration. Tamron and sigma are famous by this.

complementing: MTF of canon is a bit better than sigma.
