A great lens which was discontinued years ago. The 1st version of 90/2.8 was excellent at wide open, whereas the latest version has improved close-up performance. I did a comparison on latest Nikon 105mm VR and latest R90/2.8. It shows leica has even more resolution than 105 VR at medium distance. The color rendition and micro-contrast is still better than Nikon. At close distance, it produced very good result. In other words, it can be used for macro photography if small reproduction ratio is not your concern.

The current Elmarit-R 90 mm f/2.8 has the same optical design as the most recent Leica M version. It is thus a compact and elegant, almost innocent looking piece of equipment. It has 4 single lenses and represents the finally optimised concept for a moderate portrait design of utmost quality. When I first tested this lens it had been forgotten for a while in some drawer and I actually used it for the first time on my first digital Canon SLR, the D60. With an appropriate adapter of course, from some Ukrainian Kiev dealer I guess...
It is good! Very good. It has no real flaws. At f/ 5.6 it has absolutely top notch test data like more than 85 % contrast up to 20 lp/mm MTF. For 40 lp/mm it has like 75 % contrast and 55 % as the lowest value. This is all visible I.R.L. i.e., it is really sharp! With its innocent looks and easy handling, it is well worth looking for.
