It's ok for general use, hence, it's probably a good choice for a kit lens for amatures. I'd rather use this for hiking in the wet, than my better lenses, though.

better than a regular kit zoom given by other brands.. good zoom range, more than acceptable sharpness stopped down. Colors are not too bad for the price, and contrast is also pretty fine.
build quality is nothing to write home about, but it can stand serious abuse. the only bad thing about it is the slow aperture, it is 3.5-5.6 and becomes 5.6 so quickly.. Review by: freddy on Jan 5th, 2007

I brought it with the Minolta 5D Kit, it provide good contrast and sharpness at most range. The down side is only the small aperture at the tele side, but the output is comparable with the 17-35mm(2.8-4). I would strongly recommend this as a standard lens for the Sony/Monilta unless you want to go for the Sigma 18-70mm(2.8-4.5).
