Thinking of buying this lens?

Good lens, but AF is noisy. (It sounds like it needs grease or lubricant.) I brought it back to the camera store I purchased it from, a well trusted dealership with a good history, and they told me it was normal.

I would have to say that is the only real drawback, aside from price. Nice lens, very sharp, and I am happy with it.

I have the made in Japan version and it is great. AF is fast and works well in darker situations. I never shoot at F1.4 but the view thru the finder is better with an F1.4 lens. Flare is slightly higher than my 35mm F2. Sharpness is very good but not as good as the Micro Nikkors.

This lens is superb for low-light situations and I couldn't be without it.

At f/1.4 it's sharp enough, but stop it down to between f/2 and f/4 and you will see just how good this lens is. I've had prints done of images taken at f/1.4 blown up to 30"x20", and although very little is in focus, the bit that is is pin-sharp.

At smaller apertures such as f/11 or darker, diffraction limits the resolution. At these smaller apertures the cheaper f/1.8 version is sharper.

The build quality is a little dissapointing, it's not much different to the build of the f/1.8 version, which costs two-thirds less.

AF is quick, and very precise allowing you to make the most of that bright f/1.4 aperture.
