The Tri-Elmar 16-18-21 is the alternative to the large Zeiss Distagon ZM 2,8/15mm and to the VC Heliar 4,5/15mm. I have no experience with the Zeiss, but I have carried out extensive comparisons with the Heliar using Leica M7 and M8. The Tri-Elmar has better flair resistance, more even illumination but higher distortion figures. Overall sharpness is also a bit better with the Tri-Elmar but not by much.
At 21mm the Tri-Elmar stands behind the Voigtlander Skopar 21mm in terms of sharpness - not much, but it is there - shows better illumination and distortion figures. At 18mm it is in-between the quality delivered at 16 and 21. The Tri-Elmar is a good performer at 16mm, but not as sharp as the Summicron 2/28, the best Leica wide-angle lens, and among the best lenses overall. This is quite understandable as it is more difficult to design a 16mm lens. Still, it is a real Leica, crisp, contrasty and with the characteristic 3D effect. Mechanically it is impeccable, pleasant to handle with. There are some interesting innovations with the hood and lens cap. The solution of the UV-IR filter is clumsy, I leave it at home and do more post-processing. Sizewise it is still tolerable to a Leica M user. Add your reviewLogin required
