Sure it is a little soft in the corners - who isn't? If you filling the center of the image with a real live 3D subject, and can do a little Photoshop, and avoid the Artic - you should be good. Best bargain 9x on a Nikon DX you are going to find for the investment. Paid for itself in one session.

Solid, old Nikon build quality, fairly fast AF and, except for softness at the longest focal length as all zooms exhibit, it has terrific sharpness and contrast.
It is longer and heavier than most recent Nikon lenses in this focal length save for the super high end cost lenses. But, for a very palpable sum on the used market, combined with the build, heft and optical quality, I can use this zoom with a big smile and more money in my pocket. The tripod collar is well built and does not get in the way. Besides, with the weight of the lens, I use the tripod collar, not the camera tripod mount. It balances well and is rock solid.
