Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC Reviews

One enjoyable lens. Incredibly sharp wide open at 55mm in the center (pretty much comparable to a 50/1.8) with good corners and acceptable at 200mm and f8. Probably the best choice in the 55-200 consumer league. On the negative side, the slow and noisy AF, the rotating inner tube and the odd 55mm filter thread make it a less convenient lens. A real bargain.

I purchased this lens for my Nikon D70 after my Nikkor 70-210mm f4 developed fungus, a very sad business. This little gem turned out to be the sharpest lens in my kit beating the Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 and Tokina 12-24mm by a large margin. This lens was so good that I decided to abandon Nikon for Canon as I was not happy with the prosumer Nikon lens quality and wanted to try the lower end Canon "L"glass. I now have the bargain priced Canon 70-200mm f4 "L" lens and it is very good. But I am not sure it is that much better than the little Sigma. Bottom line: this lens is perhaps the best value for money you can find in the moderate telephoto zoom range. Highly recommended.
