It's heavy and requires powerful and steady hands to handle well. My absolutely all-time favourite Nikon lens. I have shot thousands of Kodachrome 64 slides since 1990 with this lens and it never stopped to amaze me with its spectacular results. It is a one-touch zoom lens and has a focus limiter ring at the far end to adjust the focusing distance range for greater accuracy. Not the easiest lens to handle and rather slow in AF action by today's standards, but nevertheless one spectacular piece of glass. If you have the hands and prefer manual focusing over autofocus, it is worth tying it, if you can find one second-hand. By the way, I am not selling mine!

The best 250 euro I ever spend (used).
The only minus is when shooting digital and you tilt your camera forward to get a preview on your screen, the push-pull ring drops downward (gave me a minor heart attack the first time it happend)

I find this lens to be one of the very best all-round zooms. Very much better than the kit lenses of today: sharpness, contrast, colour. A full 1 to 2 stops faster, too. The compatibility for DLSR depends upon the camera, not the lens.
