Nikon has never made a so-so 24mm. This is as optically solid as their best, but I do miss that MF/AI-S build.

Bought new for 360$ US ,about 10 months ago,was looking for 28mm 2.8 AI-s but couldn't find new one at that time ,so I bought this one.
Great piece of glass in a smaller and lightweight cheaper package , sharpness matches or excels the best zooms Nikon offers at 24mm.
On DX focal length is about 36 to 37mm.
Sharp from F2.8 to F11 on DX and on FX sharpness peaks at F8 to F11.
Best for general street use and travel photography.
I would not take portraits with it as it's quite wide for that.Though I took some family group photos with it ,which are great !
No falloff on DX , by F4 it goes away on FX.
I use thin filters with it ,the thicker ones give slight vignetting mostly the grads or better use step up ring with 77mm filters.
Filters I have used on it are :
B+W 52mm XS-Pro Ultraviolet (UV) MRC Nano #010M Filter ,it's on it all the time.
Nikon52mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter II (Slim)
Tiffen HT ND 1.2 77mm with step up ring 52-77
and B+W 52mm #110 Solid Neutral Density (ND) 3.0 Multi-Coated Filter for some experimental shots ,none of them gave any kind of trouble on it :)
Very slight and simple barrel distortion on DX.
I didn't notice CA on D7000 at F8 and F11 at larger apertures there is some even if D7K corrects them but can be fixed in software, such as Lightroom ,which I use.
While traveling ,I take this 24mm and leave the huge 24-70 2.8 at home which is heavier ,bulky and about same or even less sharp at 24mm !
The kit 18-55 DX (cheap, light, small and sharp)and 50mm 1.4 for low light or the 85mm F1.8 D ,these are better than carrying and protecting the 14-24 and 24-70 IMHO :)
On a score of 10 ,I'll give it 8/10
Overall a lovely glass to have ,I'm very pleased with it.
If I want a wider picture I take 4 to five vertical shots and make a great sharp panorama :)
Get it ,if you want it ,not a disappointment at all.
Made in Japan which is good :) as slowly either they are stop making them or shifting to good old China as with the 50mm 1.4 and 85mm F1.8 happened.
Cheers ! :)
