Good general-purpose lens, excellent sharpness, contrast and color with mild wave distortion on edges at 24mm. 72mm filter mount. Good bayonet tulip lens hood.

I have own Nikon, 28-105(3.5-4.5), 35-105(3.5-4.5), 24(2.8), 50(1.8), 35-70(2.8), 80-200(2.8), Sigma 28-70(2.8), Tamron 35-105(2.8), 28-200(3.5-5.6), and Tokina 28-75(2.8). Sorry to say that, this might said to be the worst lens I have own, which is not even better than the 7x zoom Tamron lens inconsideration with its price and zoom range.

Mine was a very good all around performer. The lens shade is huge but a real necessity as this lens will flare in backlight situations. Good for people because it is not razor sharp like a 105mm Micro and is therefore more flattering to the face and softer in contrast.
I sold mine because I could not trust it outdoors when the sun came out. Indoors, there was some difficulty with the AF when the lights were dim as at a wedding reception where I needed it. I would rate it as a very good value and I love the focal length of 24-85. It works on film or digital and I like its 72mm filter rather than a 77mm.

Purchased this zoom to use as a general purpose, all-arround lens, due to very practical range and speed. Though it provides OK results, my post-film analysis showed that this lens never produced any of my favorites or top rated pix... missing sparkle? So, I would rate it as a good zoom, but not in the same class as the basic set of fixed focals (20mm - 85mm- 180mm)

This lens is very very blurry on the outside 20% with wide angle range shots even at 1/1200th @f8. Don't buy it unless you like the "lens baby" look on everything.
