A perfect lens rendering naturally colours and maintaining sharpness across the entire frame regardless of f/stop. I started shooting portraits, but eventually grew so attached to this lens, that used it to shoot landscapes, city-scapes, sports, action, urban scenes and people. And wisely, I did so! This lens is so sharp and the colours so natural when you shoot Kodachrome 64, that the resulting transparencies just freeze the time!

bokeh on this lens is also very smooth, one of the best.
Some of my best all-round shots were taken with this lens. It's very slightly soft on corners wide-open and tremendously sharp and contrasty everywhere at anything >= f4.

Best at f4 onwards. At infinity and set at f8, the 105mm f2.5 is sharper than the 105mm f4 Micro at the same setting.

An absolute no-compromise, world-class lens. Great when it first came out, it's only gotten better (smaller and sharper) with time. The images make me wish I used this lens more often. AND it's a true bargain at current prices.

I'm relatively new to photography (3 years)and the owner of a D200. During these years I have read almost anything published on lenses and bought 18 of them and get rid of 11.

It took me a while to understand that sharpness is by far not the only thing mattering in a picture and that color, contrast, bokeh are as important.

Nikkor 105mm 2.5 Ai is an exemple of a perfectly well balanced lens.Images taken with it are stunning. Sharp from f/2.5 with great bokeh and color.

Even if Nikon 70-300mm vr and 55-200mm vr ( 2 of my exs) can be as sharp as the 105mm, the pictures resulting are completely different. Here you are trading quality for convenience.

If you can find this lens at a good price just buy it. Be awared that light metering is only working with pro (D2X,D3 etc) and semi-pro (D200,D300 etc) bodies on Ai and Ai-s lenses.
