Leica APO-Elmarit 180mm f/2.8 Reviews

With similar optical formula as its big brother - 280/4 APO, the APO-Elmarit 180/2.8 is a world class lens. Sharp from center to edge at ANY aperture. High micro contrast even started at wide open. The CA is strictly controlled, and so is LCA. Focusing is silk smooth. With its light weight and durable construction, I'd say this is the best 180mm ever produced in 135 format.

The speed of this lens attracted me, as a lot of my work is military reenactment, and use of a tripod is out of the question. One feels it is a privilege to own such a lens, and in my opinion it is virtually faultless. Use at full aperture is without restriction, and one has to concentrate on handling. This can be improved by fitting a Leica StA 1 supplementary ring (part No. 14636) around the rear body of the lens, and setting it slightly to one side with the unused tripod bush suitably padded. The pad now sits in the palm of the left hand, enabling the focus ring to be spun by the edge of the left thumb. Such recourse greatly extends the usability, allowing lower shutter speeds, and long periods of use without tiring.
