Excellent lens. Even at full aperture the sharpness reminds me of my Leica lenses. I have made portraits and candid photography at full aperture (F 2,8) in all focal lengths. The sharpness is unbelievable for a zoom lens. Its a shame for Canon they dont include the lenshood in this price. The lens is definitely heavy and big for these focal lengths, but you can't have everything..

I use it for extreme low light , especially buildings and night scenes , the IS is better than faster lenses , cause it allows you to stop it down to get more DOF than any fast lens can give you.

The USM is very very fast and accurate, the color is so well rendered, the contrst is perfect.

Almost, never need sharpnening in PP , this lens is that sharp.

If you have gripe about it , you will get complete satisfaction with any other lens.

This is the best standard zoom for a crop body regardless of any mount and any time.

This is better than the 17-40L, 24-105L , 17-85IS , the Tamorn 17-50 and much better than the Nikon Af-S17-55DX , which I also have on my D80.

The IS and the f2.8 combo makes it a real winner in low light.

Not a bad lens by any means but it is not in the same league in terms of optical performance or build quality as its nearest full-frame equivalent, the EF 24-70/2.8L which I also own.

The L is sharp full open whereas I don't think this lens hits its stride until f/4.

Of course, it benefits from an excellent image stabiliser which, when combined with its wide maximum aperture and the good high-ISO performance of even the cropped Canon dSLRs, makes it hugely versatile. Even so, I consider it to be a shade over-priced.
