Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Reviews

Fooled by the initial MTF curves but at f8. A rather disappointing lens with very slow and noisy AF, less thank desirable macro range and fair build quality

an interesting lens, a little bit out of date - mine is probably over 15 years old - af is slow, but the lens itself is quite fast (f/2.5). i put it out again to try it on a 20d. the 50mm is then a 80mm and a good portrait but remains also a makro lens. was impressed from the picture quality - even compared with a new efs 10-22 usm which i had mounted before.

It's a lightweight lens of mainly plastic construction and has no USM. But don't be fooled. It is pin sharp as both a macro lens for tight squeezes and an all purpose standard lens. The sharpest of the set of lenses I use on my 1Ds III (which includes two L zoom lenses and the much vaunted EF 85/1.8). A steal at the price.
